The Power at Pentecost is Present Today  Acts 2:1-11

I.    The Experience of the Holy Spirit’s Power (2:1-4)
         a.	They heard

II.   The outward Expression of the Holy Spirit’s Power in Tongues (2:5-12)
          a.  The Nature of Tongues
                 The gift of tongues in Acts 2 is the God-given ability to communicate the Gospel 
                    in a foreign language that the speaker has never learned.
         b.  The Purpose of Tongues
              i.	Is . . .
                 1.  A Gospel witness in their own language
                 2.  A sign of judgment for Israel rejecting Christ (Isaiah 28:11-12 and 1 Corinthians 14:21-22)
                 3.  A confirmation of the apostles’ authority (Hebrews 2:3-4)
                 4.  A unifying of the Church—the body of Christ
                      a.  Jews (2:1-4)
                      b.  Samaritans (8:14-17)
                      c.  Gentiles (10:34-47) 
              ii.  Is not . . . the only sign of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 12).
III.	The Evidences of the Holy Spirit’s Power
          a.  Internal witness that we are the children of God (Romans 8)
          b.  Transformation to show the character  of Christ—the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22 and 2 Timothy 1:7-8)
          c.  Boldness to proclaim the Gospel of Christ (Acts 4:8-12, 4:31, 6:3-10, 7:1ff., 9:17-20 and 11:22-24)
          d.  Spiritual service to strengthen the body of Christ (Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4, and 1 Peter 4)
IV.	The Explanation of the Holy Spirit’s Power
          a.  The outpouring of the Holy Spirit demonstrated that God’s plan was being fulfilled
          b.  The outpouring of the Holy Spirit confirms Jesus’ authority and that his promises are true
          c.  The outpouring of the Holy Spirit confirms Jesus’
                         ascension and exaltation to the right hand of the Father in heaven
Application
     •	Believe and receive (Ephesians 1:13)
     •	Yield and obey (Ephesians 5:18)
