Assurance Amid Anxiety

God’s Big Plan, for our lives today

Assurance Amid Anxiety   First John 5:13, 20-21

1.  The purpose for writing is eternal life: “I write these things . . .”
 a.  The Apostle John wrote his Gospel to persuade his readers to “believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,
and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:30-31).
 b.  John writes his first epistle to give assurance of salvation to those who believe.

2.  The recipients of eternal life: “to you who believe”
 a.  Belief is trusting in what God has demonstrated to be true.
 b.  The Apostle John believed (John 20:8-9, 20, 26-29, 30-31; 21:2, 13-14, 24).
 c.  John invites us to believe (John 1:12 and John 3:16).

3.  The source of eternal life: “in the name of the Son of God” (see 5:20-21)
 a.  He is the true God.
 b.  Jesus is His Son.
 c.  He is eternal life.
 d.  Everything else is an idol.

4.  The assurance of eternal life: “that you may know”
 a.  Doctrinal assurance: Are we trusting Christ alone for the forgiveness of our sins?
 b.  Spiritual assurance: Is the Holy Spirit working in your heart and life?
 c.  Relational assurance: Do we love others with Christ’s love?
 d.  Moral assurance: Are we confessing sin and seeking to obey God’s Word?
 e.  Growth assurance: Are we growing in our walk with Christ?

5.  The nature of eternal life: “that you have eternal life.”
 a.  “You have . . .” speaks of eternal life as in the “present” tense.
 b.  “Eternal life” is knowing “the only true God” and his Son, “Jesus Christ”whom He has sent (John 17:3).
